A WWII-dated British Clinometer Sight, Mark IV, manufactured in 1944, stamped with military acceptance marks. This optical/mechanical sighting instrument was used for indirect fire calculations, primarily with the Vickers Medium Machine Gun and also adaptable for small artillery pieces and mortars. Its purpose was to accurately measure elevation and depression in degrees, allowing crews to lay down sustained indirect fire on pre-registered targets. The piece is painted in wartime green with brass fittings, featuring adjustment dials for elevation/depression (to ±20 degrees), and a spirit level visible through the top window for precision alignment. The instrument is clearly marked with its designation and date, “CLINOMETER SIGHT (MARK IV) – 1944,” making it an authentic period example.
