An original Rhodesian Regiment Pocket Book, an official military issue field and reference manual used by members of the Rhodesian Army during the Bush War era (1960s–1980s).Printed in Salisbury (now Harare) under the authority of the Rhodesian Army Headquarters, this compact booklet served as a comprehensive soldier’s guide, containing sections on fieldcraft, weapon handling (FN FAL/R1 rifle), map reading, first aid, radio procedure, and military law. It also included standard operating procedures (SOPs), dress regulations, and command structure notes relevant to regulars and territorials alike. The pocket book was carried in the breast or cargo pocket of bush uniforms, designed for quick reference during training and operations. Most editions were printed on khaki or olive drab card stock, with cloth or plasticised covers to withstand tropical conditions. This example, by construction and typography, appears to date to the mid-to-late 1970s, corresponding to the height of the Rhodesian Bush War, when troops of the Rhodesian Light Infantry, Rhodesian African Rifles, Grey’s Scouts, and BSAP Support Units were engaged in extensive counter-insurgency operations.Such items are highly collectable due to their rarity, as most were field-worn or destroyed during demobilisation after Zimbabwean independence in 1980.
