A matching pair of original SADF Pattern 73 R1 rifle magazine pouches, designed for use with the FN-FAL / R1 7.62×51 mm NATO rifle, which served as the standard infantry weapon of the South African Defence Force from the early 1960s through the late 1980s.Constructed of heavy-duty olive-drab canvas webbing with reinforced stitching and metal press-stud or plastic quick-release closure tabs, each pouch was built to hold two 20-round R1 magazines. The rear features double belt loops and sometimes stamped maker’s marks (often “SADF”, “S&J”, or “D&B” within an oval) along with a date between 1971–1983.Issued as part of the Pattern 70 webbing ensemble, these pouches were a crucial component of the standard infantry rig worn by South African troops and allied formations (including 32 Battalion, 61 Mech, and Parabats) during operations in Angola, South West Africa (Namibia), and Rhodesia.Their durability and practical design made them a benchmark in southern African field gear, and surviving examples in paired condition with original fittings intact are increasingly scarce.
