An original South African Defence Force (SADF) and Rhodesian Army-pattern webbing yoke, used throughout the Rhodesian Bush War (1965–1980) and the South West African / Angolan Border War (1966–1989).Constructed from heavy olive-drab canvas webbing with reinforced stitching, and wide padded shoulder braces designed for prolonged field use under load. The yoke distributes the weight of ammunition pouches, water bottles, and utility packs evenly across the shoulders and upper torso. This configuration was standard for both Rhodesian Pattern 70 and SADF Pattern 70/83 equipment sets. Early Rhodesian versions were locally produced by firms such as Fereday & Sons (Salisbury) using imported British webbing components due to sanctions, while later South African examples were manufactured by contractors such as Crown Mills and Adams & Co. under government supply.Field modifications were common—ranging from sewn camouflage panels and plastic-coated fittings to personalised strap adjustments. The design proved robust and reliable, and was worn by elite units including the Rhodesian Light Infantry (RLI), Selous Scouts, Rhodesian African Rifles (RAR), 32 Battalion, and 61 Mechanised Battalion Group. This surviving example exhibits correct period stitching, faded olive webbing, and authentic patina consistent with active service in semi-tropical conditions.
