An original Rhodesian Army General Service Cap Badge, featuring the distinctive lion and tusk crest above a scroll reading “RHODESIA.” Struck in brass (sometimes gilt or bronze finish), this emblem was worn by enlisted personnel across multiple branches of the Rhodesian Security Forces, including the Rhodesian Light Infantry (RLI), Rhodesia Regiment, Rhodesian African Rifles (RAR), and supporting corps such as Medical, Signals, and Service Corps. The design depicts a lion passant guardant standing atop an elephant tusk, a symbol long associated with Rhodesia’s colonial coat of arms and later national identity. Beneath this is the raised scroll “RHODESIA”, denoting service to the unified armed forces under the post-UDI (Unilateral Declaration of Independence) Rhodesian government.Manufactured primarily in Salisbury and Bulawayo by contractors including K.G. Luke (Rhodesia) and Gaunt (London) for earlier issues, these badges were die-struck with two copper or brass lugs to the reverse for attachment to khaki or brushstroke caps.Later variations (1970s) may show minor differences in the relief of the lion’s mane or the shape of the tusk, reflecting wartime production variances. This example, showing light service wear and patina, represents one of the most recognisable and enduring emblems of the Rhodesian Armed Forces.
