An exceptionally rare Rhodesian Army 4 Brigade cloth shoulder flash, worn on the upper sleeve of combat and bush uniforms during the Rhodesian Bush War (1965–1980).The flash is made of machine-embroidered cotton on a khaki or olive-drab twill backing, typically displaying the formation’s distinctive four-point or numeral “4” motif—often incorporating coloured thread detailing to represent the brigade identity.4 Brigade (HQ Gwelo) was established as part of the Rhodesian Army’s reorganisation in 1974, designed to provide regional command and tactical coordination over operational areas in Midlands and Western Rhodesia, including the Gwanda–Gweru–Plumtree region. Units under its control included elements of the Rhodesian African Rifles, Grey’s Scouts, Engineers, and territorial infantry battalions, as well as joint operations with the BSAP Support Unit.Due to the limited production runs and field attrition, surviving examples of genuine 4 Brigade flashes are extremely uncommon, especially in intact, unfaded condition. Most were locally produced under sanctions, with variations in thread tone and stitching reflecting decentralised supply chains.
