Silvered white-metal cap badge depicting an elephant standing within a laurel wreath, surmounted by a small shield bearing pre-1961 South African heraldic elements. This is consistent with the insignia of the Native Military Corps (NMC) of the Union Defence Force. The NMC was formed in 1940 as a non-combatant unit composed of Black South African servicemen who served primarily in labour, transport and support roles during the Second World War. The elephant motif symbolised Africa and was distinctive to the Corps. Badge form, wreath style and shield configuration align with confirmed WWII issue examples.
