An original German World War I trench fighting knife (Grabendolch), featuring a single-edged steel blade with false back edge, designed for close-quarters trench warfare. This example has a characteristic slab wooden grip with diagonal checkering, secured by rivets to the full tang blade. The crossguard features the simple oval steel hand guard for protection during hand-to-hand combat. The knife comes with its correct period steel scabbard, fitted with a leather belt loop for easy attachment to the soldier’s equipment webbing or belt. The design prioritised strength, simplicity, and ease of mass production, making it one of the most iconic personal weapons issued to German stormtroopers and infantrymen operating in the confined trench networks of the Western Front.
