Original South African R4 1st Patt converted bayonet, produced as part of a limited conversion programme to adapt existing bayonets for compatibility with the R4 (Galil-derived) rifle. The bayonet features a black phosphate-finished spear-point blade with a modern cylindrical polymer grip and a modified mounting arrangement. The accompanying slim black scabbard is consistent with South African military issue. These conversions were undertaken in comparatively small numbers—commonly cited at around 200 examples—making them significantly rarer than standard R1 or R4 bayonets. As a result, they are highly sought after by collectors of SADF and South African Defence Force edged weapons.
